Scollop season starts this weekend

One of the many exciting things kayaking has bought to my life is the love of getting under the water with snorkel & mask to explore and hunt & gather.. it was the hunt & gather that first gave courage/motivation to get under my kayak in the hope of a feed of tasty NZ scollops.. I did not expect to get so much pleasure from being under the water and seeing the wonders below..totally addictive and I can see why so many scuba divers are so passionate about the underwater world… one day I will do a scuba course but for now snorkel is the best and easiest from the kayak…and with that I am getting my gear out ready for the start of the scollop season here in the Auckland region…if the weather is kind I will be out on the weekend, maybe from the kayak or our little 3.9 tinny…

Here is some pics and video footage from my trips last season, to be fair the weather was very average most of the summer so I did not get out as many times as I would like, this summer may be different, I plan to get a few dives in over spring just incase..if you are looking to get into freediving from your kayak have a read of my article on the subject and be sure to get in touch with an instructor for some dos & donts… and of course know your regions limits for shellfish..see links below to the rules
