Coolum Reef Kayak fishing using live baits

Kayak fishing Coolum viking kayaks (6) (800x600)

  • Location – Coolum, Stumers – first time for me,
  • Target reef fish (Sweet lip or Snapper) –
  • Primary technique – live baits

Launched off Stumers creek with Warren before sun up, loads of bait about but proved difficult to take the sabiki jig until I added some small bits of bait. Warren and I loaded a few liveys into our live bait wells and headed to the reef. I am using the Profish Twin Tackle Pod with Live bait pump fitted

Each of us landed some good fish and both took home a feed of tasty fresh reefies and released plenty as well as getting bricked on the reef by a few. I landed a few on micro jigs and some Z-Man 4″ Steakz Curly TailZ in coconut ice but the bigger specimens were all over our live baits.

My technique was heavy weight 2 hook pillie style rig with heavy 9.0 sinker to get livey to the bottom and keep it there buy paddling on station against the drift (using shimano bait runner). Tjis rig was set up as a good option for targeting coral trout so I though I would give it a go on the shallow water reef fish also.

Warren went for lightly weighted rig pretty much the same and drift over reef. Both of these rigs came from the crew at Davos Tackleworld in Noosa, Peter & Chiko know there stuff when it comes to live bait fishing here on the Sunshine Coast
