Exploration of new areas leads to unexpected findings.

With the new Barracuda Kayaks Interface sea kayak close to being launched, I stopped in to the Barracuda factory yesterday to take the prototype for a paddle. Both to get familiar with the hull again and for an excuse for an adventure and a chance to get out of the office. I was also looking to compare it in an environment where the Beachcomber is strong, tight spaces!.

One of the big things I enjoy about paddling the Beachcomber is its maneuverability, this short paddle up some narrow and shallow waterways will be ideal to see how manageable the hull is in comparison to the bilge hull and greater rocker of the beachcomber.

Note: this is the glass hull prototype with temporary Safari deck not the official Interface deck.

With the wind blowing all over the place I headed to a remote little creek protected from the wind which I had not explore before. Whilst the creek only ran a short distance before becoming too shallow and tight to go any further, there was plenty to enjoy about this paddle.

The birdlife was most significant, native birds nesting right down on the banks and native bush flourishing. The small creek had a contrasting feel, on my left was the sound of machinery busy developing a new housing estate and on my right the songbirds of NZ enjoying their native environment.

Only the Pukeko’s nesting on the banks were aware of me as I paddle quietly further up this creek dodging over hanging branches, wondering at each turn whether I could go any further and more importantly how I would turn around. The Interface while not as nimble as the beachcomber, was very easy to manage in the environment.

Too shallow for the rudder I used the edges/chines of the kayak to turn and maneuver it around tight bends and to dodge floating logs or large rocks. The Interface was very responsive and easy to move around until I got to a point it was too narrow and shallow to go any further, leaving me no choice but get out and try to turn the kayak.

Once out of the kayak and on the bank I spotted a track walking along the bank and into the bush so I left the kayak and headed off to explore a little. It turned out well worth the exploration and I will be back to explore these tracks another day, dragging the kayak up the bank and turning it around on the track was the easiest way.

When launching it back into the creek I snagged up on some line’s which I later discovered was fishing line with 5/0 circle hooks. I suspect some local kids have been trying to catch eels which would surely be in this creek, mental note to self,  bring the boys back here someday to catch eels.

After an easy paddle out of the creek I headed out into the ocean for a 5km paddle along the coast with a tail wind catching small wind waves which was effortless in the Interface. I bit of a stop at a beach out of the wind then a paddle home into the wind which was not much of an issue in this kayak…

All up another great experience in the Interface, found a new creek to explore & take the kids eeling and discovered new bush tracks close to home. The Interface proved to handle this environment pretty well and I could not fault it. Looking forward to the release of the new deck an vacuum formed plastic version that’s for sure… make sure you have liked Barracuda Kayaks on FaceBook so you can keep up with all the news about this kayak launch.
