Fergs Kayaks Auckland Fishing lesson with Paddle Guy

Last night I was invited to run one of the popular “learn to kayak fish” session at Fergs Kayaks in Okahu Bay Auckland. This is great new initiative started this season by Ian Ferguson himself to teach the basics of kayak fishing…what better place to learn than under the experienced guidance of Ferg, his staff and the very fishy waters of Auckland.

FACT: Ian Ferguson MBE is New Zealand’s most successful Olympian, competing in K1, K2, and K4 kayak events. He first competed at the Montreal, Canada Olympic Games in 1976 and again at Moscow, Russia Olympic Games (more here on Ian) … but wait there’s more!.. he loves to kayak fish, something we have in common, so when Ian could not make this session ha called me to ask if I could fill in to teach 5 new comers the basics and maybe even catch a fish or 2…

after a bit of a reshuffle of my schedule I headed to Okahu bay to meet the 5 participants.. the weather was not particularly good with a strong 15knot N/E wind blowing..one positive of that is we got to test the sea anchors and practice drifting with soft plastics… everyone had a great time and I am sue they will be back for more..see below gallery of images from the session..if you want to learn more about kayak fishing get in touch with the guys at Fergs Kayaks in Either location (Auckland or Wellington)..they have all the gear on hand and the right staff to help.. contact them HERE

In this session we covered

  • choosing the right kayak
  • essential equipment and setting up the kayak
  • paddling tips
  • anchoring
  • basic soft plastics
  • wet exit
