Scollops, Snapper & Kahawai all within 20 mins of Auckland’s North Shore

… OK so thats 20 mins by boat, proabably take about 1 1/2 hours by kayak to get where I fishing on Sunday… whilst this report has nothing to do with kayaking other than I am going to plan a trip back here in the kayak and make an overnight trip of it.  I thought I would share these pics from my fishing trip with some freinds yesterday out in there boat fishing the “Islands” behind Rangitoto Island, it took only 20 mins to get there in the 5m tinny and this really reminded me just how lucky we are here in NZ to have such options and such fertile fishing grounds on the doorstep of Aucklands CBD..

so the report goes something like this.. head out to the “Islands” (that’s all you get, cant make it too easy) at 7.30 am (felt very odd getting my gear ready before the trip and not grabbing any paddling gear!) …fish the deep holes while we wait for low tide, this will be easier to look for scollops for me as a free diver/snorkeler. The fishing was average seeing me as the only one taking home any fish but the ones I did catch were good  48cm Snapper, 62cm kahawai both landed on bait… all the smaller snapper that were put back were landed on bait too, the plastics and jigs were not working at all this day.

just before low tide we anchored in a bay half a dozen other boats who had the same idea..this led to me thinking this late in the scollps season we might be hard pushed to get a feed…I was mistaken! after 10 dives in 8 meters I had my quota all where excess of 110mm (legal size is 100mm in Auck)  and all within 10 meters of the boats anchor chain! great to see such a fertile fishery… and looking forward to fresh scollops and snapper for dinner tonight with the family…
